To investigate which hospital practices contribute to better maternal outcomes, researchers 50 interviews with health care professionals at eight hospitals in New York City. Only half the institutions performed well on measures of maternal morbidity. The researchers’ findings suggested using hospital learning collaboratives “focused on optimizing organizational practices and policies” could improve outcomes. In addition, increasing clinician and staff awareness and education on maternal health disparities, and addressing structural racism “may be important tools for improving equity in maternal outcomes.” The appeared in the May issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
