Health care facilities need to create environments that enable front-line nurses to leave work “feeling like they have made a difference to their patients, families and colleagues,” former Luminis Health Anne Arundal Medical Center Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Barbara Jacobs, MSN, RN. An ��������member who recently retired at the Annapolis, Md., facility, Jacobs added, “If we do not create these environments, we will continue to see nurses leave the bedside.” With the baby-boomer generation of nurses retiring, Jacobs said leaders must provide strong nurse residencies and clinical resources for the less-experienced staff replacing them. As health care institutions work to achieve efficiencies to combat financial concerns, leaders should avoid saddling nursing teams with non-nursing activities, she added.
