Nurse creates bleeding control course for children

Kate Carleton, RN,  a school-based program to teach children how to stop bleeding if they encounter an emergency or are at school when a shooting occurs. She and her colleagues from Sutter Roseville (Calif.) Medical Center have taught a bleeding control course to more than 10,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Carleton modified the course offered by the American College of Surgeons, , which shows bystanders how to treat hemorrhages. Elementary students learn how to pack a wound and apply direct pressure, while middle and high school students learn how to manage a tourniquet and give hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
