Additional support needed to successfully implement EBP

Evidence-based practice education and ongoing support are necessary to EBP implementation, a study found. Published in the May issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration, ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉúmember Lisa Wayman, PhD, RN, and colleagues compared implementation rates for participants in an EBP immersion compared with participants in an EBP immersion plus a follow-up EBP course. Participants in the EBP immersion group implemented 18% of their initiatives. Participants in the EBP immersion plus the follow-up course implemented 35% of their initiatives, and another 22% of participants were in the process of implementing their projects. Among recommendations, the authors suggest allowing enough time for implementation and providing mentoring and support. Wayman is a clinical quality program specialist at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Phoenix.
