Last week, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) released a report examining the potential for integrating social care services into health care settings. The report identified three essential components for successful integration: an appropriately staffed and trained workforce, health information technology innovations and new financing models. The report made recommendations for strengthening the provision of social care in the health care sector. These included developing a digital infrastructure with interoperability between health care and social care organizations; defining which social services Medicaid will cover; and funding research into effective implementation strategies. The agency announced the rule aims to empower patients “to make informed decisions about their care” as well as to improve the quality of care transitions. The rule promotes interoperability and requires institutions to focus on the patient’s goals and treatment preferences when planning discharge to post-acute care. According to the announcement, the final rule also “revises the hospital patient’s rights and the facility’s requirements regarding a patient’s access to their medical records.” (CMS news release, 9/26/19)
Thu, 03 Oct 2019 15:56:45 -0500 News Palliative care may alleviate ICU staff moral distress /news/palliative-care-may-alleviate-icu-staff-moral-distress
Critical care nurses may be less likely to experience moral distress when they feel patients’ palliative care needs are being met, according to research in the October issue of Critical Care Nurse. A survey of critical care nurses in seven intensive care units within an academic health center found an association between their levels of moral distress and their perceptions of the degree to which palliative care was available to their patients. The majority of respondents reported they had little palliative care education. “Health system leaders should prioritize palliative care training for critical care nurses and their colleagues and empower them to reduce barriers to palliative care,” the researchers concluded.
Thu, 03 Oct 2019 15:51:51 -0500 News Potential employers help develop clinical nursing electives /news/potential-employers-help-develop-clinical-nursing-electives
Academic practice partnerships can have profound benefits for participants according to a recent article in the Journal of Nursing Administration. Lienhard School of Nursing at Pace University partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., to develop electives in oncology, neonatal intensive care and perioperative nursing. The partners used the article to describe their process and the benefits of their collaboration. The electives “provide high-quality clinical experiences that build competency, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills; solve the problem of not enough preceptors or quality sites; and enhance graduates' potential for hire at the hospital where they had their experience. For the practice partner, this model creates the opportunity to customize clinical education to meet unique workforce needs, screen potential employees, and hire more job-ready new graduates.” This effort is in keeping with Guiding Principles for Academic-Practice Partnerships, developed by a joint task force of and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in 2012. The nursing school plans to develop more electives based on student interests and the needs of local practice partners.
Thu, 03 Oct 2019 15:48:02 -0500 News Academy supports efforts to reduce gun violence /news/academy-supports-efforts-reduce-gun-violence
Speaking at a Sept. 26 press conference held by the House of Representatives Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, American Academy of Nursing President Karen Cox, PhD, RN, called for action to address what she called a public health crisis. Cox was invited to speak by Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Ill., also a nurse, who asked the Academy to provide a nursing perspective on the issue. Nurses care for people and communities injured by guns in mass shootings and other violent encounters. “The American Academy of Nursing stands ready to be a part of the solution and help shape policy to end this public health crisis,” Cox said. The Academy is on record supporting the Background Check Expansion Act (H.R.8/S.42) and increased funding for research into gun violence. It also published recommendations for reducing gun violence, including “A Public Health Crisis: Recommendations to reduce gun violence in America” and “Recommendations in Response to Mass Shootings.” (American Academy of Nursing news release, 9/26/19)
Thu, 03 Oct 2019 15:41:19 -0500 News AJN compiles evidence on preventing acute care infections /news/ajn-compiles-evidence-preventing-acute-care-infections
A review of the evidence on community- and hospital-acquired pneumonia, surgical site infections and Clostridioides difficile infection suggested steps nurses can take to prevent and control the spread of these infections in acute care settings. Good antibiotic stewardship is key, as are good hygiene and contact precautions and the use of adjunctive environmental cleaning methods. “Given the profound effects that HAIs [hospital acquired infections] can have on patient outcomes and health care costs, it's clear that infection prevention and control measures are paramount,” noted the article, which appeared in the American Journal of Nursing (AJN), concluded. Mercy hired member Betty Jo Rocchio, MS, CRNA, to be the system’s chief nursing optimization officer and take a less structured, more innovative approach to the work of chief nurse executive (CNE). “Optimization basically means we're driving the best outcomes with the best performance of our coworkers with a minimal amount of friction in daily processes,” Rocchio told HealthLeaders Media. Her goal is to make it easier for people to do the right thing for patients, she said. She added institutions wanting to retain a more traditional CNE role can enhance their ability to innovate by having their CNEs partner with a chief nursing informatics officer.
